The Royal Family website, however, gives detailed information about succession. It states, "the succession to the throne is regulated not only through descent, but also by Parliamentary statute. The order of succession is the sequence of members of the Royal Family in the order in which they stand in line to the throne."
As per the website, the next in line is The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, who is the elder son of King Charles. Since birth, he is second in line of succession after his father to the throne.
It says, "When James II fled the country in 1688, Parliament held that he had 'abdicated the government' and that the throne was vacant. The throne was then offered, not to James's young son, but to his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange, as joint rulers."
Thus came into existence, The Bill of Rights (1689) and Act of Settlement (1701), which have laid down many conditions such as only a protestant can be considered for the succession, while a Roman Catholic is excluded from the line.
The Succession to the Crown Act (2013) made certain amendments, ending the system of male primogeniture and the provisions by which those who marry Roman Catholics are disqualified from the line of succession. These changes came into force in March 2015.
King Charles III, formerly known as The Prince of Wales, was born on 14 November 1948 at Buckingham Palace and became heir apparent on the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. He is the eldest son of the Queen and Prince Philip, the then Duke of Edinburgh.
A period of mourning has been declared, as per the wish of His Majesty The King, that would continue until the seventh day after the royal funeral of the Queen. The royal mourning will be observed by members of royal family, royal household staff, representative of royal household on official duties, and troops committed to the ceremonial duties.
Flags at the royal residences will remain half-masted until 8am on the morning after the final day of royal mourning.
