As polio virus is spreading across New York, the governor has declared a state emergency. The health officials have confirmed that the wastewater sample in New York and adjacent counties were tested positive for a poliovirus. They fear that this virus can cause paralysis, if people get infected. So far, only one case of infection has been confirmed. The USA was declared polio-free in 1979 after the disease was largely eradicated by vaccinations starting from 1955. The new case is the first one ever since. What is worrisome is the fact that polio is an incurable disease. The only way is prevention through immunisation by vaccine. The virus causes paralysis among children, in some cases, leading to permanent disabilities and even death. The officials also worry that the vaccination rate is too low in the New York state. The health department is working towards raising the immunization rate to over 90% across the state. इस कहानी को हिंदी में पढ़ें Watch Video ...
