Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif has condemned the incident and has called for a high level meeting with the Punjab police for information on the attack. While it is believed that it was an assassination attempt to kill Imran Khan as he has been opposing the current government ever since it came into power. He has dubbed the current regime as imported government funded by foreign powers.
The local police stated that the attack was motivated by religious reasons as the rally was accompanied by loud music. However, Khan has spoken in the past about the possibility of an assassination attack on him.
Khan had started this rally demanding for dates for a fair election. His relation with Pakistani military establishments has deteriorated since he was ousted as the PM.
The attack seems to be turning the already polluted political atmosphere into a bigger disaster in the country. The supporters of Khan are angry and there are reports of spontaneous protests all over, which could lead to a major crisis in Pakistan, although the security across the nation has been beefed up. A lot also depends on what Khan, who is undergoing a surgery, has to say to his supporters.
