While TikTok is banking on its advanced algorithm, Facebook has failed to keep up with the rapid shift in the feed-driven social networking to discover content of interest. Recently, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confessed that he failed to predict the new trend.
As opposed to relying on recommendations by friends and family, people are more focused on discovering content of their interest via social networking feeds. It is all about getting the most compelling content irrespective of its form, whether a short video, text, or image.
Ever hungry for newer and more interesting content, people have seen a paradigm shift in their choices for more information in the past few years. While, they still like the content shared by their friends online, a higher preference is being given to social networking feeds.
It is more like everyone is interested in discovering their own preferred content based on certain likes and dislikes. It is not about who creates, but rather what is being offered. TikTok seemed to have understood this new pattern among users early on. It designed its algorithm such that the recommender system focuses on compelling videos based on historical data and habits of its users.
As Zuckerberg sees TikTok as a tough competitor, he is planning to work on more advanced AI to recommend photos, text along with short videos. Facebook appears to be losing ground with more users ditching the platform and the company has already lost over 56% of its stock price this year.
