On Sunday, the boat was carrying Hindu devotees to a centuries-old temple when it capsized in Korotoa river in the northwestern Panchagarh district. The devotees had headed towards Bodeshwari temple on the occasion of Mahalaya, which heralds the auspicious arrival of Goddess Durga and the 10-days celebration of Durga Puja.
As the rescue operation by local authorities is still on, dead bodies are being recovered everyday. On Tuesday around 18 bodies were recovered from Debiganj and Boda upazilas in Panchagarh and Atrai river in Dinajpur, as reported by the local media. Some were able to swim back to the river bank as soon as the accident took place.
Overcrowding is being cited as one main reason. However, the authorities and investigating committee will only be able to confirm the other reasons for the mishap after they complete their investigation.
Boat and ferry accidents claim many lives in Bangladesh every year mainly due to overcrowding. There were women and children among the passengers. Over 20 bodies are still missing.
Durga puja is one of the biggest festivals in eastern India as well as in Bangladesh.
