The suspension bridge was recently repaired by a construction company Oreva Group, but was opened for public without securing the fitness certificate from the government authorities. Those involved in the repair work have been booked by the local police and a high level committee has been formed to investigate the matter further.
The unfortunate visitors were sold tickets to walk on the bridge, but little did they realize that it was a bridge between life and death. The bridge snapped and in a moment all fell into the river. Those who survived this mishap are being treated at the local civil hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site after this deadly incident. The condolences have been pouring in from people all over the world including the top leaders.
At the time of incident, the 150 years old British-era bridge, was believed to be loaded with around 500 people, way beyond its capacity of only 150 people at a time. It was closed in March this year for renovation and was reopened only four days prior to its collapse. As per the documents, Oreva Group opened it for public five months ahead of the agreed upon schedule.
As per the forensics report, the collapse of hanging bridge was caused by the overcrowding, forcing the old metal cables to snap. Only the low level managers of Oreva, security guards, ticket collectors and contractors are among nine accused who have been arrested so far, while the top brass have been spared. A public Litigation (PIL) has been filed in Supreme court for hearing on November 14.
Bhupendra Patel, Chief Minister of Gujarat, has declared a statewide mourning on Wednesday for the victims who died in the tragedy. The search operation for dead bodies trapped in the muddy water of the Machhu river is still on.
This tragedy will remain itched in Indian history. An unpardonable behavior by those involved in this act of crime that cost so many lives at once!
