Jazz legend Saxophone player, Pharoah Sanders passed away at age 81 on September 24 in Los Angeles, California, US. Saxophonist Ornette Coleman described him as "probably the best tenor player in the world." Sanders was known for spiritual jazz music as he drew inspiration from Karma and Tawhid.
Sanders was a member of John Coltrane's groups in mid-1960s, in which he played saxophone and used techniques such as overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic. He has also collaborated with Leon Thomas and Alice Coltrane. He has released over 30 albums as a leader.
Sanders, originally known as Farrell Sanders, was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 13, 1940. He began sis professional career as a tenor saxophone player in Oakland and later moved to New York City. In 1965, he became a member of John Coltrane's band.
