Google was accused of imposing anti-competition contractual restrictions on the Android mobile device makers. The manufacturers were required to pre-install Google Search App and Chrome browser to be able to offer Google Play Store. They were not allowed to install forked version of android on the mobile devices.
In 2018, the European Commission had fined Google with record EUR 4.34 billion based on the accusation that Google had cemented its dominance in general internet search, at a time when the importance of mobile internet was growing significantly.
However, Google in its defence, says, that Android has only created more options for the users, thus supporting thousands of successful businesses in Europe as well as across the world.
Google had taken over Android in 2005 for US $50 million. The operating system is believed to dominate the world market with around 70% mobile phones running on it across the globe.
