The angry women removed their mandatory headscarves in the capital city, Tehran. The protesters included not only women but also men, who chanted slogans against the Shia Islamist government of Iran headed by Ali Khamenei. While women chanted, "Death to the Islamic Republic."
Mahsa died after being in coma for three days in Tehran. She was arrested on September 13 by the police during her visit to the capital city. She belonged to Saqqez, her hometown, where angry protesters vandalized the Iranian national flag.

Although, the police has clarified that there was no physical contact between them and Mahsa, eyewitnesses claimed that she was beaten inside the police van. Reports also suggest that she went into coma after being assaulted by police. Her CT scan showed her skull was fractured.
The Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi has announced a probe into the matter amid international pressure from all corners of the world.
